What Functional Medicine is All About

Functional Medicine involves understanding the origins, prevention and treatment of complex, acute and chronic disease and conditions. It is patient-centered, science-based and best-practice driven. That is why each treatment is different for each individual. Every person receives a detailed analysis of their conditions to determine a proper diagnosis and provide adequate treatment, or mix of treatments and therapies to aide in the overall healing process.

Functional Medicine's Core Principles:

Individually Focused:

Every person is unique in all variables (genitive variances, environmental variance, physiological variance, mental variance, etc) - in standard pathology training the disease itself takes precedence and is looked at as the same in every case (person) - in functional medicine we understand that the person is more in understanding recovery vs the specific pathology they may be struggling with internally.

Synergy:

There must be a balance with all facets of life - internal, external, biomechanical, physiological, environment, life style, mental.

Webbed Interconnections:

It is very apparent the body does not function on a individual system basis, it truly functions as a finely balanced network of systems that work in close harmony, rather than separate systems function autonomously not affecting any other system.

Health is Vitalistic not Mechanistic:

Health and Wellness are not defined as the absence of disease or not being sick. Instead health and wellness are more clearly defined as having optimally functioning and communicating systems of the body. Everything we do is either moving towards more sickness or moving to be more well. Health and wellness are never static.

Education:

Time and time again we see that the patients that are the most successful are the one who understand their concerns and conditions. This is why we feel it is so crucial to spend the extra time to educate the client as best as possible regarding their condition.
